Bingo

* An average British game of bingo takes between four and four and a half minutes.
* The average speed of a British bingo caller is 23 numbers per minute.
* The average time to check a winning claim is 30 seconds.
* There is a UK Caller of the Year Competition in which bingo callers compete for a cash prize and the chance to call the numbers in Las Vegas, as well as to become the bingo ‘ambassador’ for Britain.
* The bingo industry employs over 20,000 people from callers, and change givers to cleaners and accountants.
* There are 699 licensed and operating bingo clubs in Great Britain.
* For the year 2000 the total estimated market was around 89 million admissions.
* Over 3 million people regularly play bingo in licensed clubs.
* Players are often members of more than one club.
* Players often arrive 2 hours before the game starts, to enjoy a meal or chat with friends.
* More than two in three people go to bingo for social, rather than financial reasons.
* Many celebrities like to play bingo, including Denise van Outen, Elle MacPherson, Damon Hill, Mariah Carey, Bianca and Jade Jagger.[citation needed]
* In 2004 more people attended bingo than football matches in both UK leagues.
* The current Bingo Caller of The Year is Blake Robson, from South Shields.
* All bingo halls in the UK participating in the National Bingo Game must adhere to the somewhat more strict rules on calling numbers because of the overwhelmingly large prize money (sometimes up to £500,000). This includes a double repetition of every single number, in the format, “Fifty five, both the fives, fifty five”.
* Castle Bingo in Canton, Cardiff, was the first purpose built Bingo Hall in the UK
* 60% of bingo players are smokers.
* For somebody to achieve a full-house, a group of ten players would (on average) need 77 numbers to be called out. One hundred players would need 67, one thousand players would need 59 and one million players would need 40. (Note: these figures require an unsafe assumption regarding the manufacture of tickets.)

Nouvelle Star 2007 | La Finale

June 13, 2007 · 3 Comments

Tonight is the final episode of Season 5 of the Nouvelle Star 2007. The series seems to have been going on forever so I’m quite happy to see it come to an end. I just want to know who the winner is and move on!

Tigane and Julien Doré are the finalists. Who will be the Nouvelle Star 2007?

The night starts of with a performance by the final ten contestants. I see Soma still hasn’t learnt to sing! The rest of the former contestants do just fine. Just to recap, the final 10 included Ilyes Yangui, Canelle, Alex, Soma, Raphaelle Dess, Pierre Darmon, Julie, Gaetane Abrial and of course Tigane and Julien Dore.

Tigane | Celebration

Tigane chose to sing Celebration by Cool and the Gang. Four blues once again from the judges, boring! The judges seem to have gone a little crazy and their comments aren’t really worth repeating. Needless to say, they were happy with his performance.

Julien Dore | Smells Like Teen Spirit

Julien’s first performance of the night is Smells Like Teen Spirit from Nirvana. I was thinking Nirvana would be perfect for him but after that performance, I don’t know. I didn’t like it at all. All blues from the judges. Andre said thanks for being here and that Julien is a crooner punk? Maybe I got that wrong. I think Dove is drunk or something. Marianne said they knew of his talent from the beginning but they weren’t sure he would make it to the end. He didn’t crack throughout the series which is great. She is really proud to have met him. Manu speaks so fast I can barely understand him so I won’t even try to translate what he said.

Tigane | Ne Retiens Pas Tes Larmes

Four blues for Tigane for his performance of Ne Retiens Pas Tes Larmes. Dove said how Tigane has is enormously talented because he is only 19 years old, has never taken any singing lessons, has never sung before, and has never been on stage before the show. I didn’t know that about Tigane. That definitely makes his performance more outstanding.

Julien Dore | You Really Got Me

Julien sings a great song, You Really Got Me by the Kinks. Great performance by the musicians. Standing ovation from the crowd, Marianne, and Dove. Four blues again. I much preferred this performance than that earlier tonight. Dove said he is philosophic in his performances. Marianne said that was the first time his yelling during a song was justified. Manu was really impressed.

Tigane | Hey Ya!

Next up for Tigane is Hey Ya by Outkast. That was definitely his best performance of the night. Standing ovation from the crowd, Dove, Marianne, and Andre. Does Manu never get up? Guess what? Four blues. What a surprise! Marianne said it was magnificent. Andre said that it’s the first time he has sung in his own, completely unique manner. It was fantastic. Manu said it was incredible and that he wants to dance when he hears Tigane sing. Dove thinks Tigane has invented the sentimental groove style.

Julien Doré | La Mal Aime

The last performance of the night is La Mal Aime. I think this performance should be enough for Julien to seal his victory. One red from Dove. Yay Dove! Boos from the crowd. Dove said it wasn’t interesting, he didn’t know what the point was. He has said before that he thinks Julien is a genius but he didn’t get that performance. Marianne said he doesn’t need to do too much. He doesn’t need to do anything more, he is great. Andre said it was stylistically magnificent and it was a brilliant interpretation. Manu said he’s innovative and a brilliant talent.

La Nouvelle Star 2007 is: Julien Doré

Nouvelle Star | Semi Finale

June 7, 2007 · 6 Comments

The second last show is on tonight. Who will be in the final next week: Julien, Tigane or Gaetane? I’m guessing Julien and Tigane but you never know.

Tigane | Rock Your Body

Tigane starts of the show singing Rock Your Body by Justin Timberlake. Well it was kind of boring and the crowd was strangely quiet. He got the usual 4 blues from the judges. Andre said he doesn’t do a lot on stage but that’s what he likes. Dove said there is no reason he shouldn’t be in the final next week. Manu called him ‘Mr Groove’ and said there aren’t many artists in France who sing that kind of music. Marianne said Manu is exactly right.

Gaetane | I Don’t Know

Gaetane sings I Don’t Know for her first performance of the night. Her English accent still bothers me and I much prefer Gaetane when she sings in French. She sang really well though, particularly towards the end of the performance. She looked relieved to get 4 blues from the judges. Marianne said she sang the song in her own way, completely different from the original which was great. Manu said it’s great to have seen her progress each week. Manu said she has really opened up and is starting to enjoy herself on stage.

Julien | Tainted Love

Julien sings Tainted Love by Soft Cell. Another unique and brilliant performance which I loved. A standing ovation from the crowd and Marianne and Dove. Four blues from the judges which he deserved. Manu said another exceptional performance. Marianne said it was extraordinary vocally. She said the technique he used for singing that song was extremely difficult and she was amazed he was able to do it. She also said the others are so far behind him. Dove said he can sing anything because he has the rock attitude and he shouldn’t worry about what others think.

Tigane | Hello

Tigane’s second performance is Hello by Lionel Ritchie. He got a much bigger reception from the crowd this time. Another 4 blues. Manu said now he’s ‘Mr Smooth’. Andre said he has the courage to sing something simply which made it great. Dove said he’s going to vote for Tigane during the ad break which he’s never done in 5 years of doing the show. Marianne said he sang in a really smooth and sexy manner without being sickly sweet.

Gaetane | Man I Feel Like a Woman

Gaetane’s next song is Man, I Feel Like a Woman by Shania Twain. I wouldn’t have thought that was really her style, that song. Oh, a red from Marianne. Marianne said it was well sung but the song was too old for her and she didn’t like when she sang the oh, oh, oh’s. Dove said it’s a difficult song and he likes it when she lets go a bit on stage. He said he never agrees with Marianne so they’ll never get married. Andre said she sang with Grace and he adores her style. Manu said he agrees a bit with Marianne and he was 50/50 about giving her a red. He felt like she opened up towards the end and that’s why he gave her a blue.

Julien | Vanina

The final performance of the night is Julien singing Vanina by Dave, a song from the 70’s . He can sing so well when he really wants to and in this performance he did exactly that. Fantastic. I don’t know what to say. If he doesn’t win this competition there’s something seriously wrong with the French public. One red from Manu. Manu thought he wasn’t convincing in his performance. Marianne said it was incredibly good. He sang in his own way as usual and it was great. Andre said he took another risk and it was a pure creation of his own which was super sexy. Dove said he agreed a bit with Manu and would like to see him go further next week, if he makes it through to the final.

The result:

Gaetane is out.

The final is on next Wednesday.

1/4 Final | Acoustic Special

May 31, 2007 · No Comments

There are only 4 left in the competition. There’s not long to go now before we find out who is the Nouvelle Star 2007. Tonight it’s all acoustic and Tigane is up first.

Tigane | Satisfaction

Tigane starts off with a classic Rolling Stones song, (I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction. A pretty lively performance which is well received by the crowd as usual. He’s definitely grown on me; I like Tigane more and more as the competition goes on. Four blues from the judges again! Love your voice, you’re really laid back and you gave a rock song your groovy touch, says Marianne. The others agreed.

During the week, Gaetane did a tandem jump out of an airplane, something she had always dreamed of doing. That was pretty impressive.

Gaetane | Time After Time

Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper is the acoustic choice for Gaetane. I prefer her when she sings in French, mainly because I think her accent sucks, but she did a pretty good job of singing this song. Four blues from the judges. Andre said she sings with maturity and that she performed a ’spiritual striptease’. Bloody hell he’s crazy. Dove always has something negative to say (I adore Dove) and said the performance was missing a little something which he couldn’t quite put his finger on. Marianne said the song really suited her and she sang it really well.

Julien | Baby One More Time

Julien chose to sing a Britney Spears song, Baby One More Time. Who’d have thought he could turn such a boring crappy song into something completely wild but equally crappy I’d say! I think he’s a bit of a dick but I can’t help but like him anyway. He puts the others to shame as far as being a performer is concerned. What did the jury think of this crazy performance? Four big, bright blues, just like his eyes. Marianne said she preferred the beginning and said it was a much better performance than last week. Dove said he preferred the end of the song over the beginning because he was surprised, which he loves. Manu loved both parts of the song. It was very ’arty’ which he loves. Andre said it was the first time in the competition that they have had a real artist performing. I’m a bit with Marianne, I like when he sings seriously but he’s a great performer either way. It’s never boring with Julien around!

 Julie | Torn

Natalie Imbruglia’s songs are perfect for Julie. I love Torn although it’s quite odd being acoustic. She sounded a bit strange at the beginning, like she was out of time with the music but that might just have been due to the crowd clapping along. She could have done so much better. This is the first time she has sung in English during the show. Two reds, one from Marianne and one from Andre. Andre said it was mainly her accent or her poor English skills that were the problem. Marianne didn’t like it at all.  Bad luck Julie but there’s still another song to go.

Nice duet from the boys.  How romantic!

Tigane

Another great performance from Tigane and 4 more blues from the jury. Dove said he was disappointed when he finished singing because he was enjoying it so much. Marianne said it was a great performance and she was surprised how he can run and jump around the stage and still keep in time with the music and not be out of breath. Manu and Andre loved the performance again.

Gaetane | These Boots Are Made For Walking

Another great choice of song for Gaetane - These Boots Are Made For Walking by Nancy Sinatra. She’s done really well tonight although she got a red from Dove, my hero. Dove said she didn’t sing well and the performance was a bit overplayed. He never really explains himself well but that’s Dove for you. Andre said it was ‘delicious’. He needs to take a cold shower, or two. Manu thought it was great.

How old is Julien? He’s got more wrinkles than me and he must be around 10 years younger than me. It must be from the strong sun down in Nimes where he’s from. I do love his accent though. I used to live in Montpellier, just down the road from Nimes and loved listening to everyone speak in their crazy accents.  It’s so boring here listening to the Parisian accent every day.

Julien

A slow song from Julien which is sure to please Marianne who prefers when he sings in this style - the ‘crooner’ style. Four blues again for Julien. Dove said he’s a real talent. People either love Julien or hate him and Dove says he loves him. Marianne said he was just himself in this performance, no screaming, no yelling just great singing. She said he is extraordinary. Manu and Andre had only positive things to say. At the end Marianne said it was magic.

Julie | Casser La Voix

Julie finishes the night off with Casser La Voix by Patrick Bruel. Three blues and a red from Dove. Marianne said she was absorbed by the song and that it was a very strong performance. Andre said she is still singing false notes but her singing is intense and he likes her more now than at the beginning of the competition. Dove said he liked the performance but she makes too many mistakes. He loves the emotion when she sings but it’s not enough. Marianne said she sings with her heart and that’s what counts.

The ugliest man in France is now going to sing. Christophe. Granted, he has a great voice, just don’t look at him.

The result:

  1. Gaetane
  2. Julien
  3. Tigane
  4. Julie

Julie is out.

Speciale | Chansons D’Amour

May 30, 2007 · 3 Comments

I didn’t get to see this show live but I’ve pretty much caught up with all the performances now. I was super, super disappointed to see that Pierre was voted out. He was my favourite from the beginning but I think he just became too boring. I’m sure it was his choice of songs more than his talent and the quality of his performances. Why did he choose such crappy songs and not more modern songs. Anyway, it’s done now.

I’m surprised to see Julie is still in the competition. She has always been my favourite out of the girls but I didn’t expect her to be popular with the general public. I think it’s great and would love to see her go further.

Gaetane is just making it through every week. I know she’s popular because she’s pretty and while I think she does sing well, I don’t think she could ever become a successful solo artist.

It looks like Tigane is getting more and more popular each week and that includes me liking him more and more. He is appreciated by the jury and the public and so has a real chance to win the competition.

I still think Julien is the one to beat. He didn’t do so well this week, not according to the jury at least (especially Marianne) but I’m sure he’ll be there at the end. I loved his version of Moi Lolita and have been listening to it a lot lately but admit to being a bit disappointed with his later performances not matching that one.

Here is a quick roundup of last weeks songs (24th May 2007):

Pierre | Angel | It’s Not Unusual

Pierre sang Angel by Robbie Williams (4 blues from the judges) and It’s Not Unusual by Tom Jones (1 red from Dove). Dove criticised him for being too classic and I think this is exactly why he is no longer in the competition.

Tigane | Love’s Divine | Every Breath You Take

Tigane chose to sing Love’s Diving by Seal and then Every Breath You Take by the Police. A couple of great performances again by him and as usual he got 4 blues from the jury for both songs.

Gaetane | Homme Sweet Homme | Ma Vie En L’Air

Gaetane sang Homme Sweet Homme by Zazie followed by Ma Vie en L’air by Jeanne Cherhal and got 4 blues for both performances.

Julie | Pour Que Tu M’Aimes Encore | Je Suis Venu de Te Dire Que Je M’en Vais

Julie received just one red vote during the night, from Dove, after she sang Je Suis Venu de te Dire Que Je m’en Vais by Serge Gainsbourg. No problems though for her performance of Celine Dion’s song Pour Que Tu M’Aimes Encore.

Julien | Le Coup de Soleil | I Put a Spell on You

Julien got 3 reds over the course of the night which was quite a surprise. He got one red from Marianne for his performance of Le Coup de Soleil, originally by Richard Cocciante. Plus he got 2 reds after singing I Put a Spell on You by Screamin’ Jay Hawkins. Marianne was really unhappy after both performances.

The result:

  1. Julie
  2. Julien
  3. Tigane
  4. Gaetane
  5. Pierre

Pierre is out of the competition for 2007’s Nouvelle Star.

No Nouvelle Star This Week

May 21, 2007 · No Comments

Well not for me anyway. I’m heading off to Italy for a few days so I will miss this week’s Nouvelle Star. I love Italy so I’m not exactly upset about missing the show. I will be back in France next week but I might not be back in Paris in time to live blog the episode.

I do have a prediction - in two weeks time only the guys will be remaining. On verra!

The Final 6 | Big Band Week

May 17, 2007 · No Comments

Tonight each contestant will be singing 2 songs each so we’ll get to hear plenty from our favourites. The final 6 start off by singing Copacabana which was a little pointless for the girls who didn’t get to sing too much but Pierre sounded great.

Raphaelle - Goldfinger (Shirley Bassey)

Let’s hope they go a little easier on Raphaelle tonight. She sounded great if you ask me. It’s a great song and she sang it really well. This kind of song is perfect for her. Four blues from the judges, yay! Marianne said she looks magnificent. Dove said it was very elegant. Manu said it was pure pleasure and a joy to listen to. Finally, some nice things to say about Raphaelle.

Tigane - Isn’t She Lovely (Stevie Wonder)

I still don’t get it with Tigane. He sang quite an unusual version of Isn’t She Lovely. It was kind of strange that he went and grabbed his mother at the end. Well, I think it was his mother. The public seems to love his performance. Four blues again. Everyone seems to love him. A lot of elegance, it was great, bravo - from Manu. Andre called him the Jazzman and said, ‘thanks from the bottom from my heart’. Dove - pure happiness, I’m a fan, bravo. Marianne, said he has everything.

Gaetane - Toxic (Britney Spears)

Gaetane decided to sing the Britney Spears song, Toxic. Not a good choice, I don’t think. It doesn’t really show off her voice. Of course,
I don’t like her anyway so it’s probably just me. She got less of an applause than Tigane. Two reds and 2 blues. Marianne and Dove gave
her a red. Marianne said she didn’t go far enough. It should have been simpler or more wild, one way or the other. Andre said she always takes a risk and performs with class. Dove said he likes Gaetane but found it boring. He almost fell asleep at one point. Nice one Dove! Bravo from Manu.

Pierre - For Me Formidable

Pierre sang For Me Formidable and sang well as usual but he wasn’t as good as previous weeks. Two blues, from Marianne and Andre, and 2 reds, from Dove and Manu. Marianne said he gives pleasure and that the song was made for him. Dove said it’s the first time he sang a wrong note and that it was nothing new. He’s still bored. Manu is an unconditional fan of Pierre but he too found it a little boring and scolarly. He should be taking more risk. Andre understands what they said, it was a little flat, but when he let go at the end, he liked it a lot.

Julie - Comme Un Garcon (Sylvie Vartan)

Julie sings a very boring version of Comme Un Garcon. I wonder if Dove will be sleeping by the end. I’ll be surprised if she is still in the competition next week. Then again, I was surprised when she made it through last week. Three reds! Only Manu gave her a blue. Andre said that was the wrong choice of song for her. ‘So what’ he said. Marianne loves the modernity with her but that was forced and not a good song for her. Dove said he has always defended her. He wasn’t bored this time but it looked like she was. She should have done better than that. Manu said he was touched and liked it a lot.

Julien - Strangers in the Night (Frank Sinatra)

Not as good as last week. I loved Moi Lolita. I don’t know. They’re all boring tonight. I’m so disappointed. The crowd is going crazy. They love him and so do the judges. Four blues again. Dove said he didn’t try to do too much and that was the way to go with that song. Extremely touched was Marianne. He as a rare talent said both Dove and Marianne. Marianne finished by saying ‘It’s always great to listen to you.’

Raphaelle is heading the way tonight with her version of Goldfinger followed by Julien. Let’s hope for a bit more in the next round of songs.

Raphaelle

I don’t know what Raphaelle sang but who cares, it was boring. Marianne said she couldn’t give her a blue because she messed up the words and forgot what she was doing. That must have been why it sounded strange to me, although I wasn’t really paying attention. Manu said she was liberal with the structure and he liked that. It gave it originality. Andre said it was super sexy at the beginning.

Tigane - Billie Jean (Michael Jackson)

Tigane sang a very original version of Billie Jean. I must admit I like his version. I like this much more than his earlier performance. He got a standing ovation, including from the judges. Marianne and Manu got up on stage to hug him as well as the band leader. The crowd loved it and fair enough. No surprise he got 4 blues, he really deserved that. Andre said his head was spinning and it was great. Marianne said the harmony was extraordinary, bravo. Manu said that blew his mind. The performance was exactly what he loves and adores with Tigane and he knows he’s not the only one. Dove said he couldn’t say anything because they were out of time but the time he spent explaining that, he couldn’t have said something constructive!

Gaetane - Don’t Know Why (Norah Jones)

I like this song a lot so I hope she does a good job of singing Don’t Know Why… She sang really well but it was no where as good as the original. This performance was when of her best, definitely better than earlier in the night. Four blues from the judges. Andre is too emotional to talk. How embarrassing and pathetic. Really great, said Marianne. Dove said she changes from common to excellence and that was excellent. Manu said it was elegant. That’s the 3rd or 4th time he has used that word tonight. He needs to get a thesaurus.

Pierre - Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me (Elton John)

I’ve really lost interest in Pierre recently. Why is he singing this crap? He sings well of course and the end was great. He got a huge response from the crowd so he should make it through to the next round. A standing ovation for him including from Marianne. Four blues. ‘Sublime’, said Dove. He took a risk and it works when he takes a risk. ‘You were really strong’, said Andre. Manu said it was completely the opposite from earlier in the night and his standard is really high. Manu went on and on about nothing.

Julie - Tes Yeux Noirs (Indochine)

Four blues from the judges for Julie who sang Tes Yeux Noirs. Marianne said her performance was so sweet and she loved it. Andre said her risk paid off and it was magnificent the way she performed that French song. Manu said it was very elegant. Oh la la! Learn some new adjectives Manu!

Julien - Mourir Sur Scene (Dalida)

Another standing ovation tonight for Julien who sang Mourir Sur Scene. No surprise that he got 4 blues again. Dove said nothing. Marianne said he’s a prodigy. Manu said he could be a success in France or internationally. They all loved his performance once again.

Result…

1. Pierre
2. Julien
3. Tigane
4. Gaetane
5. Julie

Rapahelle is out. Dommage!

The Last 7 | Public’s Choice

May 9, 2007 · 4 Comments

Tonight on La Nouvelle Star - Public’s Choice:

Tigane - Your Song

Tigane was first up tonight and he sang Your Song, originally by Elton John. I don’t know why he’d want to sing an Elton John song but he sang really well. He’s definitely not boring Tigane, he sings what he likes in his own way. He’s very entertaining and while he’s not one of my favourites to win, he’s definitely doing well. Of course he got 4 blues from the jury.

Raphaelle - Hurt

Raphaelle sang Hurt by Christine Aguilera and got 3 reds from the jury. They all think that she sings technically perfect but she lacks emotion and something unique. Her performances are simple and good but not at the level they want to see. Andre said that she sings like she is much older than she is and that’s what I find but I wouldn’t have given her a red. She’s good enough to continue I think and the public seems to think so too. I don’t think she’ll be our tonight with that performance.

Julie

Julie sang a French song, I missed the name, and as usual I didn’t recognise it. I like her but she doesn’t have the voice to be a professional singer. She doesn’t have a strong voice and it shows every time she sings. She got 4 blues from the jury which was a big surprise to me. They said she has improved a lot and improves every week. Marianne said she’s ‘modern’ which she has said a number of times. I think she’ll be out tonight despite the kind words from the judges.

Soma - Walking Away

Oh, Soma, when are you going to start taking singing lessons? He chose to sing Walking Away by Craig David. The beginning was pretty bad and the rest was marginally better. He’s pretty useless. When is he going to be out of the competition? He’ll probably make it through again tonight. He got 3 blues and 1 red from Marianne. Andre said it wasn’t perfect but it was an improvement. Marianne said she loved the band, that he continues to sing poorly, and that it’s not enough to be cute. Sounds about right to me. I don’t know how he could get 3 blues while Raphaelle only got 1. Maybe the judges didn’t take their medication tonight.

Pierre - Grace Kelly

Pierre sang Grace Kelly which I didn’t expect from him. I enjoyed it but it wasn’t my favourite performance by him. Marianne said he didn’t sing the melody as it should have been sung. Dove thought he sang a song which wasn’t really ‘Pierre’. I hope he gets through and sings something more to my liking next week. I think Pierre lacks the fans which he needs to win the competition. I really think he deserves to win but I have my doubts that he’ll do so. I hope he won’t be out with this mediocre performance.

Gaetane - Ironic

Gaetane sang Ironic by Alanis Morissette. She sang mostly well but sometimes she was really off - it hurt my ears! Surpisingly she started well and then went downhill, it’s usually the other way around. Four blues from the judges - why? Marianne said you could tell she was comfortable with that song and she sang it simply and well. Andre said it is a difficult song to sing and she sang it with her own touch. Andre is completely in lust with her, he should try to be more objective, I think. Red from me but no doubt she’ll get through.

Julien - Moi Lolita

Julien chose to sing Moi Lolita tonight and I was so impressed. I didn’t know the song but I loved his performance. He really is unique, talented, and most definitely entertaining. The only thing stopping him from going all the way is that, while some people love him, others hate him. He’s not one that will be appreciated by the mass public. However, he could have enough support to win and I really hope so. Four blues from the jury and he deserved that. Totally exceptional, said Manu. Marianne said it was a quality performance and an original performance. Andre said it was sublime and thanked him for being on the show. Dove said he’s a real artist.

The result:

  1. Raphaelle
  2. Tigane
  3. Julien
  4. Julie
  5. Pierre
  6. Gaetane
  7. Soma

Well, I knew Soma didn’t deserve to get through but I thought his crazy fans would vote him through but it wasn’t to be. Soma’s out!

Speciale Legendes

May 2, 2007 · No Comments

I’d like to start off by saying how much I hate the group songs. Honestly, these performances are just embarrassing. Let’s get on with the real show.

Soma - La Boheme

This is Soma’s last chance for sure. I’d say he’s at an immediate disadvantage by singing first. Well he was pretty boring and I don’t think he sang that well. He got three blues - one red from Manu. The judges weren’t completely happy with him but agreed that he had improved quite a bit. His fans should get him through but it depends on how the others go.

Alex - Alexandrie Alexandra

As usual I don’t know the French songs so it’s a bit hard for me to judge but he sounded quite a bit off at times. In fact, he sounds awful. I think Alex has a lot of potential but he just off the mark each time. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s out after this performance. Yep, he got 3 reds. Only Dove gave him a blue, who knows why. He was just being generous I think.

Raphaelle - The Rose

Raphaelle sings The Rose by Bette Midler. I must admit to quite liking this song all those years ago. She did really well I think. She is the best so far tonight for sure. Thumbs up from me! Blues from everyone except Dove. Why! He thinks he’s heard it all before. She should be doing something new and taking some risks in his opinion. The other judges admitted her performance wasn’t that original but she sang really well. She’ll make it through to next week.

Tigane - One

I love this song by U2 - he’d better do a good job. Ouch, my ears hurt! What the hell? He’s destroying this beautiful song. Oh, boy, get off the stage already! Three blues and a red from Marianne. Dove adored it because he made the song his own and didn’t just sing it like Bono. Yeah I get that but I still hated it. Marianne said the beginning was crap and I agree totally and after that I stopped listening.

Julie - Ne Me Quitte Pas

Julie sings a French song from the 50’s - Ne Me Quitte Pas, originally by Jacques Brel. I’d suggest that song belongs in the 50’s. She sang well but the performance was nothing special. I would have liked to seen a better performance from her but I don’t think she’s up to the job. I do like her so I hope she continues on to next week. She got a red from Andre who said he wasn’t touched by her performance, although Dove was.

Pierre - Somebody to Love

Somebody to Love by Queen is the choice of song for Pierre for this week’s special legendes. I adore Pierre! He was fantastic. Not a favourite song of mine but brilliant. He got 4 blues and he deserved it. Marianne said exceptional and extraordinary. Manu said it was extraordinary as well. Dove said he did the right thing by taking a risk. He’ll get through for sure; he’s just too good.

Gaetane - Frozen

Gaetane sings Frozen by Madonna. I’ve never liked Gaetane but I do admit she sang this song really well. Three blues with a red from Manu. Manu said it was neutral and without depth. Go Manu!

Julien - Light My Fire

Light My Fire by the Doors as performed by Julien. This song is perfect for Julien. Sometimes I wonder if Julien isn’t just taking the piss. He’s entertaining but ridiculous at the same time. I loved his performance. Go Julien! Dove said Julien is a great artist but he might not be popular with the general public. Marianne was being stupid but it didn’t matter, everyone understood that he was brilliant.

So in summary, Pierre and Julien were great as usual. Alex will most likely be out although Soma and Julie are at risk of getting kicked out too. The result is coming up.

Through to the next round in order:

  • Gaetane
  • Julien
  • Soma
  • Tigane
  • Pierre
  • Julie
  • Raphaelle

So Alex is out - no surprise at all.
